The Russian standard height ladder: the label is a typical figure’s body height in centimetres, and the band around it is half of the ladder’s own 6 cm step on each side. The standard does not tie a chest girth to a height: at one height it names several typical figures — the typical-figure card below the ladder is where those are shown.

What the standard says about this height

A retail chart prints one number per height and says nothing about having chosen it for you. Russia's standards 17916-86 (girls) and 17917-86 (boys) list which combinations of height, chest girth and waist girth are recognised as typical at all. At 128 cm there are five such figures, and their sizes differ.

The toddler ladder is a separate standard

Below 86 cm Russian standards 17916 and 17917 say nothing: that range belongs to Russian standard 32119, “Garments for newborns and toddlers”. Its chest girth is the HORIZONTAL one — the tape runs horizontally rather than over the bust points. These are different measurements of the same place, and 48 in one does not mean 48 in the other. One more honest detail from it: the standard allows a single garment to be made for two heights at once — 68 and 74, 80 and 86, 92 and 98. That is the measure of how approximate a size is in the toddler group.

Where the age comes from

The age on the rung pages is not our guess from height but table 2 of the same standards: “age indicators of typical figures”. The standard names two numbers — the predominant age and the mean; the pages print the first, because the question asked was “what age”, not “what average”. Below 86 cm there is no age at all: the toddler standard does not publish one, and we will not invent it.
